Ebook About Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited first work of fiction—at once hilarious, delicious and brutal—is the always surprising, sometimes shocking, novelization of his Academy Award winning film.RICK DALTON—Once he had his own TV series, but now Rick’s a washed-up villain-of-the week drowning his sorrows in whiskey sours. Will a phone call from Rome save his fate or seal it?CLIFF BOOTH—Rick’s stunt double, and the most infamous man on any movie set because he’s the only one there who might have got away with murder. . . .SHARON TATE—She left Texas to chase a movie-star dream, and found it. Sharon’s salad days are now spent on Cielo Drive, high in the Hollywood Hills.CHARLES MANSON—The ex-con’s got a bunch of zonked-out hippies thinking he’s their spiritual leader, but he’d trade it all to be a rock ‘n’ roll star.Book Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel Review :
Man I was let down. For QT's entire career I've been waiting for him to write prose, that is, something OTHER than screenplays because he's teased many times, the last time when Kill Bill came out, that he was going to transition one of his stories into prose form...But this book is written like a script (without the character names or the INT/EXT stuff of course)...For example, paraphrasing here:Instead of "Rick Dalton walked down the street" it's "Rick Dalton walks down the street" which is how scripts are written, for the moment you're in, the moment you are watching as a viewer what's going on on the screen, and that the writing is conveying for that very moment... which really isn't writing, but watching in written form...So the book just feels lazy, rushed. He even adds parts not in the film, like when Manson looks at Cliff when Cliff's on the roof. In the movie nothing happens between them and it's mysterious; in the book, Manson does what QT describes as his usual "Ooga Booga" dance... That is, QT, the author, doesn't describe Manson as a character/person in the book that we're learning about, but instead like someone from pop culture the reader should know about already...There are other changes, completely unnecessary... Rick doesn't meet the agent in the bar, but in his office, and a lot of other things just... well...In the case of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, don't wait for the book...Rewatch the movie. The very last page of this paperback (which arrived in my mail today) is a full-page ad for the Deluxe Hardcover Edition, which it says will be released soon containing "new material and new photos". So basically, we all just got suckered into buying the book equivalent of a discount-bin DVD when they were planning all along to release it as a 4K steelbook.Save your money for the deluxe edition...OR buy this one to read and keep the hardcover as an unopened collectible. OR don't buy either of them and just rewatch the movie, which you probably already know is a cinematic delight and arguably one of QT's best works that didn't need to be adapted into a novel, except that he probably got bored during Covid lockdown and couldn't resist the multi-million-dollar paycheck that Harper Perennial offered him.
